What technical SEO is, and why it comes first
Technical SEO is everything that affects how search engines access and interpret your website, apart from the words on the page. It covers whether Google can crawl your pages, whether it chooses to index them, how quickly they load on a phone, how your pages connect to each other and whether the code gives search engines clear signals about what each page is.
It comes first because it sets the ceiling for everything else. A beautifully written service page that is blocked from indexing earns nothing. A product category that loads in six seconds loses visitors before they read a word. Technical problems are also quiet: nobody sees them, the site looks fine, and rankings simply stall for months or years. That is why we treat technical SEO as the foundation of our wider organic SEO services.
The problems we find and fix
Every website is different, but the same families of problems show up again and again. These are the areas we check and repair.
- Crawling and indexing. Pages blocked by robots.txt or noindex tags by mistake, important pages missing from the index, thin or duplicate pages wasting crawl attention, and XML sitemaps that list the wrong URLs.
- Site speed and Core Web Vitals. Oversized images, heavy scripts, slow servers and layout shifts that make a page feel broken. We work to improve Largest Contentful Paint, Interaction to Next Paint and Cumulative Layout Shift, the measures Google uses to describe page experience.
- Site structure and internal links. Pages buried too deep, orphan pages with no links pointing to them, and menus that do not reflect what you most want to rank.
- Duplicate content and canonicals. The same page reachable through several addresses, product variants competing with each other, and missing or conflicting canonical tags.
- Redirects and errors. Redirect chains, broken links, soft 404 pages and server errors that waste visitors and link value.
- Structured data. Schema markup for your business, services, products, FAQs and breadcrumbs, so search engines understand your content and can show richer results where eligible.
- Mobile usability. Text that is too small, buttons too close together and layouts that break on common phone sizes.
- International setup. Correct hreflang tags and URL structure when you serve several countries or languages.
- JavaScript rendering. Content that only appears after scripts run and may not be seen reliably by search engines.
How our technical SEO audit works
We do not hand you a 200-page automated report and wish you luck. The audit is a prioritized plan, written so that you or your developer can act on it.
1. We crawl the site the way a search engine does
We run a full crawl, then compare it with what Google Search Console says is indexed, what your analytics show people actually visit and what your sitemap claims exists. The gaps between those four views are where problems hide.
2. We rank every issue by impact and effort
A missing alt attribute and a blocked product section are not the same size of problem. Each finding is labelled with what it affects, how many pages it touches and how hard it is to fix, so the biggest wins come first.
3. We fix it, or brief your developer precisely
If we have access to your CMS or hosting, we make the changes ourselves and test them. If you prefer your own developer to implement fixes, we write clear tickets with the exact change, where to make it and how to confirm it worked.
4. We monitor so problems do not return
Websites change constantly. A plugin update, a redesign or a new section can undo earlier work. We keep watching crawl stats, index coverage and speed, and tell you straight away when something slips.
When technical SEO makes the biggest difference
- Before and after a redesign or migration. Changing platform, domain or URL structure is the most common way sites lose rankings overnight. Planning redirects and testing before launch prevents that.
- Large sites and online stores. Thousands of pages create thousands of chances for duplicates, filters and crawl waste. See also our e-commerce SEO work.
- Sites that look fine but never grow. If good content is published and nothing moves, an indexing or quality signal problem is often the reason.
- Slow websites. Speed is partly a hosting and build problem. We coordinate with your developer or our own web development and hosting teams when the fix goes beyond SEO settings.
How it fits with the rest of your SEO
Technical fixes remove obstacles, and the other layers of SEO turn that clear road into traffic. Once the foundation is sound, on-page SEO makes each page say the right thing to the right audience. If you serve customers in a specific area, local SEO adds the signals that win map and nearby searches. Many clients start with a technical audit, then move into ongoing work under our full organic SEO service.
What to expect, honestly
Some technical fixes show effects within weeks, such as getting a blocked section indexed. Others, like speed and structure improvements, build gradually as search engines recrawl your site. We will not promise a ranking number, because nobody controls that. What we promise is a documented list of what was wrong, proof of what we changed and monthly checks that the fixes hold.
